Sketchbooks and Nerves – The Scrappy Sketchbook

“I feel nervous drawing in it” and “The white space is a problem for me…” are two comments we hear time and again from users who find sketchbooks intimidating.
Sketchbook Space designed the Scrappy Sketchbook to encourage adults to feel at ease. The Scrappy Sketchbook evolved as a combination of three different trains of thought:
1) There are lots of “doodle pads” for children which aim to give creative freedom to children’s sketches, whilst being inspired or guided by small amounts of imagery/text. Adults love them too, so why shouldn’t adults have their own?
2) There’s nothing precious or overwhelming about the Scrappy Sketchbook – in fact the opposite is the case. You can’t ruin it – only improve upon it! The Scrappy Sketchbook promotes the idea that sketchbooks are “unfinished” places of exploration, and not a collection of your “best” work.
3) There’s no white paper.

How to Use the Scrappy Sketchbook
Print out the file. You can print it double or single sided. Fasten the pages together with a stapler, hole punch, paper clip – nothing too worthy. You can choose to ignore the imagery on the pages altogether (at least they’re not white), or you can use it to influence your sketchbook work.
And then?
If it our Scrappy Sketchbook works for you, try making your own version by using recycled paper, scanning images, taking photos…
