How you might use the What is Sculpture? online workshop

What is Sculpture? has been designed as an introduction to sculpture for Key Stage 2. What is Sculpture? centres around a series of comments and counter comments which are aimed at making children question what they think they know about sculpture, and to open minds. The comments themselves are based around responses given by Key Stage 2 pupils when members of Cambridge Sculpture Workshops visit schools.

The online workshop should take pupils no longer than 5 minutes to experience. The pupils worksheet has been designed to allow pupils to think about the ideas further, through a record of the images shown on the online workshops and a series of questions. The worksheet encourages pupils to explore their own personal experience of what sculpture is, or can be.

Using the pupils worksheet

The pupils worksheet should be printed off before use. Once pupils have experienced the online workshop we suggest the pupils worksheet is used as follows:
  • In the classroom: Teachers decide which of the questions (numbers 1 to 8) pupils should answer. Pupils could answer the questions individually in writing, or use the questions as a trigger for drawing, or for group discussion.
  • In the gallery or museum: The questions on the worksheet could form the basis of a gallery or museum visit, to an exhibition showing a varied cross section of sculpture.
