In this five or six week clay project, children learn how to make shapes out of clay that can be displayed in a tessellated pattern either as a tiled wall or floor panel. The details here are for air drying clay as most schools do not have access to kilns. For those that do, the making process is the same except slips and glaze will be used instead of acrylic paints to create the coloured surface.
The sessions include mark making and observational drawing as well as looking at patterns. These elements can be expanded when other curriculum subjects overlap or be revisited when they do. It is suitable for 8 – 14 yr olds and can be adapted accordingly.
