Pin and Paper Fashion: A Workshop for Primary Children

By Paula Briggs

At the final Drawing and Making Workshop for ages 6 to 10 of the spring term I thought we’d use a last push of energy to make a shared sculpture. In the previous session the children had worked together to create a shared drawing, and I was so impressed by the way they worked as a team and yet retained their individual ownership that I thought we’d try a similar activity but this time working in 3 dimensions.

I took in an old tailor’s dummy as the focus for our hour-long project exploring texture and paper manipulation techniques. The only other materials were sugar paper, pins and scissors. The challenge: to transform the dummy into a sculptural fashion icon!
