How to Measure Proportions in Life Drawing

By Sheila Ceccarelli

You've seen photos of traditional life drawing classes of people holding up a pencil in front of them and squinting with one eye.  They are using the pencil to 'measure' and plot the figure onto the paper in proportion, and to get the angles of the figure's pose right too.

In this week's Experimental Drawing Class, teenagers experimented with measuring using their pencils to draw the figure in proportion.

Many thanks to Aurora for modelling.
