Introducing Graphite and Blind Drawing

In our experimental drawing class for teenagers, we enjoyed blind drawing and explored mark making with the age old drawing tool ‘the pencil’ and softer graphite sticks.

There’s nothing quite like a graphite pencil for experimenting with the pressure and depth of marks and making beautiful lines.

To take away any pre-concieved ideas of how graphite and pencils should be used (trying to undo years of ‘practise’ of using pencils the ‘right’ way!), the teenagers were asked to draw ‘blind’. Natural objects were hidden in a cloth bag and drawings were made from the sense of touch – not sight.

Not an easy task – but stunning results!
