By Jan Miller

Using scrap card to make a plant pot collage.

In this post, specialist art teacher Jan Miller documents a whole term of exploring plants and pots with a group of Year four children. The activities in this post could be followed chronologically over a term, or different sections could be dipped in and out of according to your planning.

Introduction

In our school, every classroom has plants that are looked after by the children and one pupil takes them home during the holidays to water them. Areas of their outside play is dedicated to gardening role play, planting, and looking after herbs and vegetables. Holidays often see children heading home with plants they have grown from seed, with drawings on paper wrapping the pots.

Several of the plants in the art room have survived many summer holidays and have been studied through all the art forms. During one term, Year four explored plants through several materials and on various scales from sketchbooks to A1 paintings.
