Red to Green: Taking Rubbings and Making Compositions

By Sheila Ceccarelli

Whilst facilitating drawing, I feel it’s important that observational drawing is not seen to be the only way into documenting the surrounding world. Learners at Red2Green really enjoyed the process of recording by taking rubbings from natural and man-made objects whilst incidentally making uninhibited gestures and marks with graphite.

Students created a series of rubbings, which they then cut into shapes and experimented with composition by juxtaposing the cuttings onto black paper. Students looked at patterns from the natural world to inspire their compositions.
