Exploring Materials: Soft Pastels

Chalk Pastel Portrait by Lancelot Richardson

Soft pastels (also known as chalk pastels) are vibrant, highly pigmented sticks made from dry chalk and bound with a resin or gum. They vary in hardness, ranging from soft to very hard, making them great for experimenting with line quality, layering and smudging.

Coloured papers with a bit of bite, such as sugar paper, are a great surface to use with chalk pastels.
