Exploring Materials: Water-Soluble Graphite

Water soluble graphite, pen and diluted watercolour wash

Water-soluble graphite sticks and powdered graphite are highly versatile drawing materials that combine the qualities of traditional graphite with the fluidity of paint. When water is added, the graphite dissolves and can be moved across the page in a soft, painterly way, allowing for a wide range of expressive marks, textures, and tonal effects.

These materials are excellent for building rich tonal variation, from delicate grey washes to deep, dramatic blacks.
