Adapting AccessArt: Swirly Ponds

In the ‘Adapting AccessArt’ series, we will be spotlighting how AccessArt resources have been used and adapted across educational settings.
Inspired by the Still and Dynamic Drawings: Making Magic Spells resource and adaptations by teacher Ruth Sohn-Rethel, AccessArt team member Tobi worked with KS1 learners at Sheffield Girls’ School to explore experimental and observational drawing and painting.
With a focus on process over outcome, learners explored a range of materials and techniques. They progressed from gestural spiral drawings, to revealing wax-resist with watercolour, to creating continuous line drawings of pond life, before bringing everything together through collage.
This activity was delivered in a single 1 hour 15 minute session but could be spread across two one-hour sessions for larger group settings. It also offers plenty of opportunities for extension, adaptation and collaboration.
