Wet Strength Tissue Paper Fans

Jan Miller is an Art and Design teacher with more than 25 years’ experience working in formal education settings, currently teaching ages 4-15. In this resource, Jan uses 3D modelling techniques to create decorative fans using wire, wet strength tissue paper and monochrome collage.
The activity consisted of two one-hour sessions, in which pupils first responded to the construction and patterns of traditional Japanese fans, before a wire and wet strength tissue paper model was made. In the second session, the fans were decorated using black tissue paper, to form decorative and geometric patterns.
This activity took place with Year 3 pupils (aged 7), but it can easily be adapted for other age groups. Older pupils could explore more complex wire shapes and finer, more intricate patterns, while younger children may need additional support with wrapping the tissue.
