Exploring Materials: Graphite

graphite mark making10

Graphite comes in two main forms: as a pencil, or a chunky stick. Artists may use graphite on its own to create a finished drawing, or as an underdrawing before building up layers with mixed media. Graphite is also available in a water-soluble form, allowing it to be blended and manipulated with water. Graphite ranges in density, from hard (H) to soft (B).

Build your understanding of how graphite can impact mark-making, with resources which will help you grow in confidence as you explore the material.

All resources can be adapted to all age groups from children through to adult.
