Exploring Materials: Pens

Sketch In Brush Pen by Phil Dean

Pens are a versatile and expressive drawing tool, making them a favourite for both quick sketches and detailed artwork. They encourage confident mark-making and can be used in many creative ways, from precise outlines and delicate shading to bold patterns and energetic gestures.

Pens also come in a wide range of nib sizes, allowing artists to experiment with line weight and texture. Thin nibs create delicate lines, while broader nibs make heavier marks that stand out on the page. By combining different pens and varying pressure, speed, artists can build depth, movement, and contrast within their work.

Find resources on this page which help you think again about how you might use pens to making drawings.
