Paula as a Sparrow by Tobi Meuwissen

Co-Founder, CEO & Creative Director

Paula co‑founded AccessArt in 1999, and continues to guide its mission as a passionate advocate for art and art education for all. Her work spans advocacy, leadership, pedagogy and creative innovation – through writing, talks, and practical projects – rooted in a belief that creativity is central to individual and community wellbeing.

She studied Sculpture at Norwich School of Art (now NUA) and later at the Royal College of Art in London. Paula is the author of two books: Drawing Projects for Children and Make, Build, Create: Sculpture Projects for Children. Beyond her leadership role, she continues to make and share ideas through her Instagram, where she explores art-making and creative thinking in action.

“I love watching sparrows – always on the move and happily chirping together in hedgerows. As CEO of AccessArt, I thought hard about how I wanted the bird I chose to represent the qualities I think I can help engender in the team. I do see us as a flock – and I like that sparrows symbolise joy, happiness, resilience, adaptability, freedom, and protection – all words I think can be applied to AccessArt as an organisation.”
